What are the major rituals and traditions of the Punjabi/Sikh wedding?

Indian weddings are known for their culture and rituals. Even the smallest ritual has a lot of importance in weddings. Sikh/Punjabi weddings are also known for their rituals and fun ceremonies. Punjabi weddings are colorful and larger than life. Most of the rituals and traditions are the same as any other Indian wedding. The fun ceremonies start off with the Roka ceremony. In this, the families of the bride and groom meet and exchange gifts. This ritual shows the commitment towards each other. The gifts include clothes, jewelry, dry fruits, and sweets.

The next ceremony is of chunni chadhai where a red or pink chunni is put on the bride’s head. The chunni is placed by the groom’s mother or sister, along with other gifts. The next ceremony is engagement (sagai). This is the ring exchange ceremony. On this day, the bride and groom exchange rings in front of their family and friends. Both families also give each other gifts. Some people don’t organize a separate event for this and exchange the rings on the wedding day only.

Mehendi ceremony is a must in any Indian wedding. The henna is considered as a good fortune for the marriage life. A Mehendi artist comes and puts beautiful Mehendi designs on the bride’s hands and feet. The same ceremony takes place in the groom’s house also. And on the same night, sangeet night is celebrated. Punjabi weddings are known for their lively vibe. And not having lots of dancing, how is that possible? With lots of food, the family prepares dance performances to enjoy the night.

The next ritual is the kangana bandhna ceremony where a sacred thread is tied on the wrists of the couple. This takes place on the wedding day in their respective houses. The thread is considered to be lucky for the couple. Then the maternal uncle gifts the bride a set of 21 bangles. The bangles are usually in the hues of red and white. And before the bride wears them, they are washed with milk and rose water to purify them. The bride also wears kaleere, tied by her family and friends.

After this, turmeric paste is applied on the bride’s and groom’s body in their separate houses. It is believed that the paste will bring the glow back. The Haldi is washed off with the holy water from a nearby temple or gurudwara.

After all these pre-wedding rituals, the wedding functions come. At the venue, other rituals like varmala, pheras and kanyadan are performed.
