In Kerala’s olden days, weddings were confined to small gatherings of close-knit family members. Marriages were symbolised through the essential yet simple tradition of ‘Pudava Kodukkal', which, when translated, is the gifting of a Kaithari (handloom) Kasavu saree to the bride. The tradition symbolised a crucial yet extremely pure promise that a groom made to his bride- ‘to take the responsibility of providing her life’.

Predominantly, weddings were held at the bride's ancestral home with all Vedic rituals that evoked the five elements of life. The groom usually wore a white cotton dhoti with a gold border called kasavu mundu and an angavastra called Veshti. On the other hand, the bride was dressed in gold ornaments and a Kasavu Mundum Neriyathum (Kasavu Saree). The touch of gold on the borders and the purity of that handloom added traditional elegance and charm to a bride’s unparalleled grandeur.

However, with passing time, simple weddings have transformed into huge social gatherings. It’s all about theme weddings with larger-than-life functions. Couples love the elaborate festivities, all fixed up with professional photographers and well-choreographed dance numbers. Everything has changed, sure. Or should we say, everything has evolved? Yet the charm of Keralite weddings, with the bride and groom decked in Kasavu clothing during their rituals, remains intact.

Brides and grooms still wear Kerala Kasavu ensembles that have been customised to their preference from a multitude of choices. And every time we think of Kerala Kasavu Sarees, we think of only one brand- Ekatva
