South Indian weddings have seeped into rituals and traditions dating back centuries. These ceremonies add gravitas to the union. Even in this day and age, when we follow the path laid down in the times when there was no electricity or even modern medicine, it connects us to our roots. To the very essence of our humanness.
One such ritual is the Mangalasnanam; Pellikuthuru for the bride-to-be, and Pellikoduku for the groom-to-be. This is an intimate ceremony, held on the day of the wedding. It involves a holy bath, a purification ritual for the two souls soon to be united in the bonds of holy matrimony. It begins with the anointing of haldi, similar to rituals in North India, and is followed up by a bath. It is extremely basic in nature and yet the weight of the wedding ceremony carries throughout the day as the bride and groom join lives.
Pictures of this wonderful ritual are mesmerising and captivating. Here are the latest pictures of Mangalasnanam!
