In India, it is said and believed that when two people are married, their families become related as well. An important relationship that arises out of this union apart from the one between the newly wedded couple is the one between the mother of the groom and the wife of the groom. Mother-in-law and daughter-in-law relationships are complicated and beautiful at the same time. Most women struggle when it comes to bonding with their mother-in-law after marriage.

So, let's help you out a bit in that department as we talk about all the lovely ways in which you can develop a sweet bond with your mother-in-law!

Build A Good Relationship With Your Mother-In-Law

1. Talk To Her About How Her Life Has Been

The first step towards establishing a good relationship with your mother-in-law has got to be knowing about her life. You can ask her to tell you about what her life has been like. Where she grew up, what she wanted to be, how her marriage has been and what it was like for her to have kids, are some of the questions you can ask her. This will help you understand her joys and her struggles. It is understandable for a new bride to see her mother-in-law as just an extension of her husband but your mother-in-law is her person and it will help you get along and empathize with her in a better way if you know her life story.

2. Let Her Tell You About Your Husband's Childhood

Most women feel like their mother-in-law is always competing with them. This can be because of the jealousy factor that the most important person in your husband's life is you now and not your mother-in-law. To eliminate this bitter possibility, you can talk to your mother-in-law about what your husband was like growing up. You can go through the old photos together and have a good laugh. This will make your mother-in-law feel like you acknowledge her bond with her son and that you are not a threat to it. You know that you and your partner are one solid unit. Your mother-in-law should also know that her presence and importance in her son's life as a loving mother are respected.

3. Do Some Chores With Her

Any good relationship requires spending time together. So, pick an activity that you can do regularly with your mother-in-law. If you live with your mother-in-law, you can cook together often. If you don't live together, you can try to go grocery shopping together every week. Doing chores with your mother-in-law will not only make her feel like you like spending time with her but also help you learn how she likes to do things.

4. Take Her Out For Pamper Sessions

Most women, if not all, love to get pampered. Chances are, your mother-in-law likes to get pampered too but hasn't been able to get around to it in a while. If you plan monthly pamper sessions with your mother-in-law, it will make her feel cared for. It can be anything from a massage to a facial. It is the thought that counts. Plus, the conversations that you will have with your mother-in-law as you both get pampered and relaxed will be fun and just so worth it.

5. Ask Her For Help Where Needed

Are you familiar with the Benjamin Franklin Effect? The Benjamin Franklin Effect says that if you ask someone for help makes them like you more. So, now you know what to do. Don't feel shy about asking your mother-in-law for some help where you need it. It can be about anything from cooking to gardening. The goal is to make your mother-in-law feel involved and respected. Asking her for help will show that you admire and value her.

6. Set Healthy Boundaries With Her

Setting healthy boundaries can do wonders for your relationship with your mother-in-law. You can sit down with your mother-in-law and talk to her calmly and gently about the things that you are comfortable with and the things that you are not comfortable with. For example, if you don't want your mother-in-law to come in unannounced on a work day, you can politely tell her that while you would love to chat with her, she might have to wait a little while you finish your work and get back to attend her. Setting boundaries is all about politeness and mutual respect. Also, while you are setting boundaries, give your mother-in-law some time to adapt to them.

7. Be Your Authentic Self With Her

Just because you are trying to impress your mother-in-law doesn't mean that you have to be someone that you are not. Of course, you will be slightly nicer and more respectful to her because you want her to like you but don't go over the board to the point where you feel exhausted and fake. Being yourself is key to establishing a healthy relationship with your mother-in-law where both of you are happy. If you are not being your true self with your mother-in-law, it can be hard for her to trust you and ultimately you won't be happy either. So, let your true personality shine and watch your relationship with your mother-in-law grow in the best way possible.
