From taking a break from grand weddings, to watching the whole world switched to close-knit weddings, 2020 was a year of many surprises for us in the wedding industry.

While last year, everything was inspired by the drama and classicism of royal weddings, 2020 redefined weddings for us all. And one of the biggest things we saw change were elements of bridal fashion. While some brides picked minimal elements to rock at their intimate weddings, many chose to fill the void by opting OTT ensembles. But it wasn't just the overall ensembles that surprised us this year. It was also the small elements that contributed to creating these iconic bridal looks of 2020. So, without further ado, here's a recollection of all the bridal fashion trends from 2020 that stole the spotlight!

Bridal Fashion Trends That Ruled 2020

1. Stunning Chevron Lehengas

Also known as 'the lehengas with zig-zag pattern', chevron lehengas are swoon-worthy! The Chevron print has been in vogue since 2014. It, however, truly came to life when Sonam Kapoor Ahuja walked out in a gorgeous brown and off white Chevron print lehenga by Anamika Khanna on her reception, stunning everyone with her chic sense of fashion. And in 2020, we saw both designers and brides alike embrace this gorgeous print into lehengas that are ideal for a summery wedding!

From Kajal Aggarwal's Moon and Star Mathapatti to all the major ott mathapattis we've seen over the years, this one's been a constant throughout 2020. Headband style mathapattis are chic, stylish and add the extra zing in your entire ensemble!

3. Seashells In Everything

2020 has been a great year for seashells! From seashell jewellery to outfits studded with cowrie shells, the wave of shells that washed over 2020 is one we absolutely loved! As watchers of trends online, we spotted seashells in kangans, in bridal blouses, earrings, kaleeras, haathphools and what not. Every option surprised us more than the one before and if seashell in bridal outfits and jewellery is here to stay, then we're not mad.

4. Scintilatting Sequin Sarees

Okay, let's be honest here. 2020 was the year of sarees, especially sequin sarees! Thanks to designer Manish Malhotra, there has been a surge of love for sequin sarees. Not only did brides embrace sequin sarees for weddings and other functions, but we also witnessed celebrities from all over shower love on this outfit type. We mean, who doesn't love a bit of extra bling!?

5. Patchwork Lehengas For Mehendi Functions

Dotted with multiple colours, patchwork lehengas are a bridal fashion trend we hope never goes away. This type of lehenga mostly has a ton of colours and is made with the most intricate and exquisite handwork with motifs, embroidery and sequins to name a few. It's just the right amount of quirk and colour in one outfit, which can make for a wonderful mehendi ensemble.

6. Handpainted Outfits That Ruled The Year

From lehengas to sarees, handpainted outfits have been a rage this year. It's unique and refreshing to watch brides embrace handpainted attire for their weddings. And as someone who rallies handwork over machine prints, these choices do put a smile on our faces.

7. 2020 Was All About Capes!

More than a new trend, we'd like to gladly say that 2020 witnessed the comeback of capes. An all-time favourite, capes are probably the most gorgeous addition to any bridal outfit. From being added to lehengas, to being worn over dhotis and crop tops, capes are truly a winsome attire that we wish every bride would embrace without thinking twice!

8. Floral Lehengas Made Us Swoon

Some trends are timeless when we talk about bridal fashion. These trends work for all the wedding functions and are much liked by many to-be-brides. One such bridal fashion trend of 2020 has to be floral lehengas. Floral printed or embellished lehengas are a classic for functions like Mehendi and day weddings but now we’ve started seeing them being embraced by brides for any and every function!

9. Brides Also Rocked Fanny Packs

Fanny packs are all the rage in terms of fashion in 2020. Yes, we know. The idea of a bride carrying a fanny pack sounds strange. After all, there was a time when brides all together ditched potlis because of the fuss of carrying it. But then again, 2020 brides have used every possible opportunity to surprise us. One such surprise was the addition of fanny packs to their bridal outfits, which these brides rocked like a boss.

10. Contrasting Dupattas

An Indian bride’s outfit is incomplete without a dupatta. Generally, when it comes to bridal outfits, brides often do not pair a different coloured dupatta with their lehenga. However, the millennial bride wants something unique and different for her special day, not only when it comes to the venue, decor and food, but also her trousseau. And some brides showed us how to slay a contrasting dupatta with their attire like pros!

11. Elaborate Jewellery Was Brides' Choice

Even though it was a year of intimate weddings, brides did not shy away from putting forward the best versions of themselves. In fact, every new bridal look we see every day has us weak in our knees. However, in this era of millennial brides who're closer to minimalism, when we spot a bride in an elaborate jewellery ensemble, we find ourselves brimming with inspiration! From dramatic nath designs to chunky bridal necklaces, we've been spoilt for choices this year.

12. Angrakhas For Intimate Weddings

If you've ever seen an angrakha, you know that those who choose this attire look like they belong to a royal family. They're easy to wear, lighter than Anarkalis and for brides of 2020, they were the perfect fit for an intimate wedding! These comfortable and regal looking silhouettes rose to popularity in 2020 and we hope it's a trend that moves forward to the next year!

13. Lehengas With Long Trails

Now, we're all fans of the quintessential red lehenga. But the days of mesmerizing someone in a red lehenga are far behind us. Brides who're looking to stun people at their weddings are always bound to take things up a notch. One such trend we spotted in 2020, which was quite popular, was lehengas with long trails! Long trail lehengas are the ultimate weapon for a dramatic and grand entrance for any bride!

14. Brocade Skirts

Another trend of 2020 we absolutely swooned over was heavy brocade lehenga or skirts. Heavy brocade skirts with grand ghers and simple tops or minimal cholis are the kinds of outfits which worked best for an intimate wedding. Brides who wish to stand out and do something for their intimate weddings opted for this option of clothing. They're easy to handle and gorgeous at the same time, giving it a rise in popularity this year!

One of the most unique trends in Bridal fashion that we witnessed in 2020 were these quirky and fresh payal designs with baraat motifs.
